Battery Passport Compliance Starts Before the QR: Foundation Guide
Carbmee frames battery passport compliance as 80+ fields, not a QR. Learn the five foundation checks, the guidance data points and the Battery Pass clusters before 18 Feb 2027.
The battery passport is not a QR you print in February. It is more than 80 data fields you must prove today.
Carbmee framed it well in its Battery Passport Compliance Foundation guide this week. From 18 February 2027, Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 requires a battery passport for EV, LMT and industrial batteries above 2 kWh placed on the EU market. Each passport tracks lifecycle data, carbon footprint, material composition, recycled content and durability through a QR-linked record under the DPP technical system defined by ESPR. The EU guidance on digital batteries passport data points by category, updated 15 August 2026, details which fields are mandatory now and which are not to be filled as of February 2027.
EU digital battery passport: five foundation checks
Most teams discover the data is not where they expect it. Carbmee EIS structures the readiness around product, site, supplier and transactional data and tests five checks:
- Comprehensive mapping: do you know every affected battery, including finished units, vehicle-integrated packs and tier-1 partner contributions.
- Critical raw material traceability: can you verify origin, certificates, recycled content and chain-of-custody for lithium, cobalt, nickel and graphite.
- Product-level carbon footprints: can you calculate PCFs from real BOM, supplier inputs, energy and logistics rather than industry averages.
- Data gap prevention: do workflows monitor completeness, flag missing supplier inputs and catch unsupported recycled claims before audit.
- Tiered data access: can you serve public, legitimate interest and authority tiers via QR and API without exposing commercial secrets.
Manual spreadsheets and email chains do not scale across multi-tier networks. Automotive and industrial OEMs are building a repeatable, auditable product data layer instead.
Digital product passport software for SMEs and the 80 fields
The Battery Pass consortium organizes the passport into seven content clusters along the lifecycle:
- General battery and manufacturer information
- Compliance, labels and certifications
- Battery carbon footprint
- Supply chain due diligence
- Battery materials and composition
- Circularity and resource efficiency
- Performance and durability
For EV batteries alone Article 77 and Annex XIII outline around 80 mandatory attributes. The attributes vary as static versus dynamic and as model versus individual battery. Access varies as public, persons with legitimate interest, and notified bodies, market surveillance authorities and the Commission. The structure is detailed in the Battery Pass Content Guidance and in DIN DKE SPEC 99100, Requirements for Data Attributes of the Battery Passport, published January 2025.
The guidance table updated 15 August 2026 clarifies applicability for points 16, 19 to 20, 23 and 25. Many material composition and carbon footprint fields remain not to be filled as of February 2027, while performance information, dismantling instructions, safety measures and state-of-health reporting under Article 14 are already mandatory. Knowing the difference keeps you from collecting the wrong data first.
EU ESPR compliance platform: what SMEs should prepare now
- Map batteries in scope: EV, LMT and industrial above 2 kWh, including batteries in vehicles or storage systems put into service, not just sold.
- Collect and verify supplier evidence: material composition, origin, due diligence report under Article 52, recycled content, certificates. Expect months of lead time.
- Calculate carbon with LCA-grade inputs: connect BOM, energy, transport and supplier-specific factors. Proxy values carry higher assumed emissions.
- Define access layers early: public safety and sustainability versus restricted dismantling or composition for legitimate interest.
- Keep the record versioned: state of health, cycles, negative events and status original, repurposed, reused, remanufactured or waste evolve over time.
A single battery type pilot that passes the five checks surfaces most gaps before you scale to the portfolio.
eIDAS timestamp and blockchain auditability behind the data
European trust for regulated documents sits on eIDAS qualified timestamps and seals, not on a ledger alone. A qualified eIDAS timestamp proves that data existed at a point in time and has not changed. Anchoring the hash on a blockchain adds immutable evidence that the timestamped record was later published and can be verified by any party. Hoken Pass, our digital product passport software for SMEs, adds a qualified eIDAS timestamp from InfoCert to every published version on every plan, Free included, adds a blockchain record from the Base plan, keeps version history, and exports the EU DPP Registry batch file (EU JSON or EU XML) for you to upload when the category becomes mandatory. The approach stays valid as delegated acts define access rights and long retention.
Frequently asked questions
What does the EU digital battery passport require from 18 February 2027? A QR-linked electronic record under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 for EV, LMT and industrial batteries above 2 kWh, with lifecycle, carbon, material, circularity and performance data structured per the guidance data points by category and the DPP technical framework.
How many data fields does a battery passport contain? Around 80 mandatory attributes for EV batteries, organized in seven clusters. Many composition and carbon fields are not to be filled as of February 2027, while performance, dismantling and state-of-health fields are mandatory.
What is the battery passport foundation before the QR? Product, site, supplier and transactional data connected for mapping, raw material traceability, product-level carbon calculation, completeness monitoring and tiered QR and API access.
Does Hoken Pass replace Carbmee EIS? No. Carbmee EIS builds the enterprise data foundation for carbon and supplier workflows. Hoken Pass takes the resulting battery data into a guided template with the required fields, publishes it as a hosted, versioned passport page with a QR code, adds a qualified eIDAS timestamp on every published version (and a blockchain record from the Base plan) for audit, and exports EU DPP Registry batch files in JSON and XML for you to upload.
