Digital Product Passport Use Cases: The DiPPa™ Framework in Action

How the DiPPa™ Framework turns product data into decisions, and two walkthroughs featuring Hoken Pass: premium olive oil and home appliances.

Most Digital Product Passport projects do not struggle with technology alone. They also face a methodological challenge. Companies collect product data because regulations require it, store it because auditors might check it, but do not always translate it into meaningful decisions about products, pricing or positioning. The passport risks becoming a reporting burden: costly to build, limited in return.

This challenge is at the heart of the work of Marion Rouzeaud, who spent over a decade in manufacturing and sustainability leadership and authored the book DiPPa: Rethinking the Way We Buy Things with Digital Product Passports. Drawing on insights from more than 60 experts and stakeholders across industry, academia and policy, the book laid the foundations for the DiPPa™ Framework: an independent, industry-agnostic decision-making methodology designed to connect product information with strategic direction and practical action.

The DiPPa™ Framework in Three Phases

Built around three interconnected canvases, available to download free of charge and requiring no technical background, the DiPPa™ Framework follows a structured progression: Illumination identifies what matters to customers and businesses; Measurement determines which product information and evidence are relevant; and Adaptation identifies opportunities for improvement and transformation throughout the product lifecycle.

Applicable before, during or after DPP implementation, the methodology helps organisations align stakeholders, prepare a meaningful DPP brief and make informed decisions based on their priorities.

Digital Product Passports provide product information. The DiPPa™ Framework provides the human intelligence to interpret and activate it.

Why Hoken Pass Is Building on DiPPa

We met Marion to connect strategic product priorities with practical Digital Product Passport capabilities, and the fit was immediate. While the DiPPa™ Framework provides a structured approach to defining objectives and information requirements, Hoken Pass offers the technology to support their implementation.

Our Digital Product Passport software includes guided category templates, a QR code for every passport, tiered public and private data access, qualified eIDAS timestamps on every published version, blockchain-anchored integrity (Base plan and above) and EU DPP Registry files in JSON and XML, ready to upload. Start free with 3 passports, with paid plans from €120 per year.

This collaboration is illustrated through the DiPPa™ Framework Walkthrough Series, which applies the methodology to different product categories and features DPP solution providers demonstrating relevant implementation capabilities.

Hoken Pass is featured in two published walkthroughs:

Premium Olive Oil: protecting authenticity, provenance and heritage by connecting product claims with verifiable information, helping consumers understand what makes one bottle worth €7 and another €40.

DiPPa™ Walkthrough 09: Premium Olive Oil, featuring Hoken Pass

Home Appliances: connecting energy performance, maintenance and repairability information to support better purchasing decisions, longer product lifetimes and new service opportunities.

DiPPa™ Walkthrough 10: Home Appliances, featuring Hoken Pass

Both examples are available to download from the DiPPa™ Framework Use Cases page, alongside applications across other industries.
